Happy New Year!

Dave and I spent the evening of New Years Eve watching a documentary about the American diet and the many ways it is killing us softly. Then we fell asleep in front of the television at 10:30pm.

We are party animals!

The truth is that I’ve had a nasty head cold – so sleep really was my biggest New Years wish.

We didn’t make any overt resolutions, but we did explain the theory to the children who promptly resolved to “eat more candy” and “play more video games” in the coming year. Somehow I think they missed the point. Or perhaps they’re the ones who really have it figured out.

Dave and I spent our holiday tucking all of the Christmas decorations back into the attic and re-arranging the furniture back to the original positions. I loved it. Because as much as I love the joy of the twinkle lights and holly on December 1st, I equally love the fresh start of putting it all away on January 1st, don’t you?

In addition to Christmas cleanup, I also tackled two MUCH PROCRASTINATED projects. Both involving SEWING. Go me! I got the gumption to do these projects because my step-mom came to visit over the weekend and while she was here she magically turned two of Paige’s old crib sheets into adorable pillow cases for Paige’s new big girl bed.

Watching Jane use my sewing machine like a boss gave me the courage to try it. You see, I have been, up to this point, totally and completely intimidated by that damn sewing machine. So many moving parts! So many things to malfunction!

But over the last several days I managed to finish recovering a chair that I started IN 2008 (don’t look at me like that! I know!). And, I created a duvet cover out of two flat sheets and some velcro. GO ME!

Then I did all the laundry and cleaned the entire house. Pretty much? I’m the king of the world.

Oh, and I made meatloaf, cornbread, and black-eyed peas. I HAAAAATE black-eyed peas, but I hear they bring good luck and OH MY GOODNESS we could use some. So the kids and I did a countdown and swallowed one each like a pill.

Can’t hurt. Might help.

How about you? Did you start the year off with a bang or a whimper?

  1. I used to hate putting away all the Xmas stuff and would keep it up as long as possible. This year, I started putting things away on 12/31 and finished on 1/1, except for the tree, which I would like some help with, so I’ll wait till we can find an ideal time to do that as a family (or at least as “mama and girls”). I do like the fresh clean house. Very refreshing. :) I have been sick too–the whole week of Xmas to New Year’s, boo, so although I was all better by New Year’s Eve, I wasn’t prepared to do anything other than go to a big annual multi-family party some friends of ours throw every year (which ends at 7 b/c of all the little kids), and then watch a little Downton Abbey on DVD and go to sleep by 10. Every parent I know describes their New Years Eves in similar terms–at least when their kids are small. I have no idea what parents of teenagers do on NYE.

  2. So, what are your 2013 resolutions or goals? I am in the process of making mine and could use some ideas! LOL Isn’t that pitiful?

  3. Testing. I am having trouble posting comments so this is just a test, Rita.

  4. My Christmas stuff is still up. I hate putting it away because the house seems empty without it. Plus, Christmas is such a happy time! We went away for New Year’s, just the 4 of us. We went to see my favorite college basketball team play and a very wee ‘waterpark’ in Iowa. I think “waterpark” was a very generous term for us. But we all had a blast, and they had a little course that let us all pretend we were on “wipeout”.

  5. I made it to midnight (with a brief nap from 11 to 11:30) and then I promptly came down with the flu. (Or something horrific.) My tree is still up. Sigh.
