You guys?  I have become one of Those People.  The kind that DRINK VEGETABLES FOR BREAKFAST.

Oh, you heard me.

Dave has decided that he is going to be Master of the Vitamix Blender.  And thus, I have consumed a vegetable smoothie every single day for breakfast for the last month.   Which is both terrible (because: LIQUIFIED KALE) and wonderful (because: kale!).

And can I admit something to you?  I think I feel better.  It pains me to say so, because drinking liquified vegetables is mostly repellant.  But, we tell ourselves we’re drinking medicine and we just DO IT.  We’ve replaced our bowls of gluten-y sugar-y cereal with glasses of fruits and veggies.

Our bodies are happier.  Our taste buds, however, are not.  (Can someone please bring me a donut? PLEASE?)

Here’s what’s in our smoothies (which taste alright, really, once you get used to them.  I don’t even gag anymore!):

  • Frozen fruit: Mangoes, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, bananas
  • Regular fruit: a whole apple (seeds and all!) and a clementine
  • Veggies: Carrots, Kale, and Spinach
  • protein: Hearts of Hemp Seeds, Walnuts
  • And we also throw in some ground of flax seeds.

We have some friends who are MUCH healthier eaters than we are, and they say NOT to put so much fruit in because it’s too sugar-y.  But we’re not brave enough to drink SOLID veggies yet.

Baby steps, y’all.

  1. OK, girlfriend, let me school you here. They key is to use less fruit but add a scoop of whey protein powder. Like, the kind that is chocolate or vanilla flavored. I get the big giant jug of the cheap brand at Target. It has the exact same ingredients as Pure Protein brand next to it on the shelf. It’s low in sugar (sucralose is the last ingredient, I believe) but tastes good. You put it in your smoothie with, say, almond milk and frozen fruit and spinach leaves and you’ve got a chocolate shake! Almost. :)
